A Scan of Critical World Developments
Electric Car Acceleration
Tackling climate change requires a major shift in how we travel. Transportation accounts for 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and a whopping 27 percent of US emissions. Fortunately, both governmental and market forces have been fueling a transition to electric vehicles. The UK and France have announced plans to phase out the sale of new gas and diesel cars by 2040. India has an even bolder plan to sell only electric cars by 2030—and Norway, by 2025. Showing subnational leadership in the US, California secured $200 million from Volkswagen for recharging across the state, with a focus on disadvantaged communities. With costs plunging, especially for batteries, electric vehicles are expected to be as cheap as gas vehicles by 2025. Although a brighter future is coming into view, challenges remain, such as producing the electricity required with renewable resources and shifting to a post-automobile paradigm in general.
